✪ Review ✪ KSON’s Debut Album “Light In Me”

KSON stands for King’s Son which is an appropriate name for this PK known to his friends as AJ. KSON has been writing and rhyming since he was living in Modesto, California. His Father’s Church was in the heart of the city and it was the first Church I’ve been to in such a shady neighborhood. But this was the heart and intent of KSON and his father all along. They were right in it. I strongly believe this impacted KSON into the man he has become and I know this has had a huge influence on his powerful lyrics.

In 2006 KSON moved to Oklahoma and jumped into the hip-hop scene in the greater Tulsa area. He was blessed with the opportunity to open for KJ-52 and Group 1 Crew. A few of his songs got play on his local radio station as well. All of this just helped him prepare and build up his skill and craft.

Since the beginning of this project, KSON has faced diverse adversity. “I’ll Be Here” reflects just one of his troubling experiences. In the past few years, KSON has been surrounded by darkness, not by choice. It seems as if everything has been against him. But that hasn’t stopped him or slowed him down. He remains a light in a dark place. And although he could have faced harsh depression, he said he will “keep the Light In Me” and shine on like a K Kid should.

This album has strong lyrics backed by hard hitting production. His words hit you quick like jabs from a hard-spitting-emcee like Braille. And like Braille, he isn’t afraid of speaking the truth and attacking all issues he sees. KSON doesn’t just provide trunk rattlers, he provides some soulful music and I’m sure tobyMac would be proud of him. This is just the beginning of the progression of a true artist.

The only thing I dislike about this project is that it is only 9 tracks. But that is okay. We know that with the success from this project, KSON will continue shining from within and sharing the light with us all.

My favorite songs are all the ones with features coincidentally, but if I had to narrow it down, I’ll take; I’ll Be Here, K KID, & Victory as my top three favorite songs from Light In Me.

✪ KSON ✪ Debut Album “Light In Me”

Chris Treborn & KSON went by different stage names before they left California.  They were also in a group called 2cHe (Two Christians Helping Everyone).  Although they have gone their separate paths, they have remained on the same mission, using the same tool; Hip-Hop.

KSON stands for King’s Son and originates from three scriptures;

1 Thessalonians 2:12 – We exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

Psalm 47:7 – For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!

2 Corinthians 6:18 – I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.

Originally from Northern California he started rapping in 2003. A year later he entered a singing competition called “Teen Talent” and won second place in the Nation for male vocals. After the success and encouragement from his peers, he went on to record a demo with producer Adam French; with that demo he toured Northern and central California through 2004 and 2005. In 2006 he moved to Tulsa Oklahoma were he worked with producer Antjuan Robinson. Taking time to grow his faith he served as a youth leader in several churches. In 2010 he co-founded the group Apagee, which released a self-titled EP; produced by Michael Todd. The group’s accomplishments included air time on radio stations,   Write ups in magazines ( The Urban Tulsa and Variance Magazine ) and the honor of winning a Absolute Best of Tulsa Award for being the best Blues and R&B group for 2010. In addition to the awards and publicity, Apagee ministered with national acts that include KJ-52, Group One Crew, Seventh Day Slumber, Everyday Sunday, I am Empire and many more. In 2012 the group felt lead to focus on solo projects and went in different directions. In response to this KSON began writing for the up coming album “Light In Me” set to release in 2013.

In anticipation of KSON’s debut album, Chris Treborn asked him about his project.

How did you come up with the name of this project?

The projects name was inspired by Ephesians 5:8 & Matthew 5:14. As believers we have responsibility to share the hope that’s in us, that light is the hope in Jesus Christ.

How long have you been working on this project?

The project was started in February 2013.

Who did you collaborate with on this project?

I worked with two great producers on the album; Bishop Chase and Rob Costelow. The featured artist include J Royal, Big C, D-Will, Sin, Willy Echo, Kendall Dean, Melo V, and C4R.

Where can everyone buy your debut album when it comes out?

It will be on iTunes and ksonmusic.com

When does “Light In Me” officially come out?

The release date is July the 6th

Being a Child of Parents: Honor Your Father and Mother #AnchorFAM

If you surveyed one hundred teenagers about their parents, how many would respond, “My parents are precious, valuable people whom God has given to me for my good. I appreciate their guidance, life principles, correction, and rules”? Hah! Probably not too many. Sadly, parents are more likely seen as jailers or parole officers who arbitrarily limit children’s freedom.

The God I know, however, thinks parents are worthy of praise and wants you to think so too. (By the way, this is not just for little kids and teenagers; this is also for you in your 40s, 50s, and 60s.)

“Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you” (Deuteronomy 5:16).

This is not just the right thing to do so God won’t be angry with you and punish you. Honoring your parents triggers the release of a flood of benefit into your life. God has attached a double promise to parent-respecters:

–I will increase the quantity of your life.

–I will increase the quality of your life.

What does it mean to honor your parents? It means cultivating a spirit of gratitude, because they have done far more for you than you will ever know. Because they have made sacrifices you only partially understand to bring you benefit. If it is from them that you first heard about Jesus, it is they who gave you heaven.

“Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

Is CHH a Genre of Music, a Label, or a Restriction of Style?

This article is in reply to Trip Lee‘s statement and Viktory‘s reply. It was brought to my attention via Twtter & DJ Wade-O + CHICAGOrilla

We have fought with a label since the conception of a gospel / Christ-centered Hip-Hop. Nobody wants to be called a name they don’t feel they are confined or restricted to. The term is Christian Hip Hop or more commonly know to the social media world as CHH. Rapzilla & DaSouth support and promote CHH artists. We are a community of artists, emcees, rappers, and producers that live a Christian lifestyle and reflect that lifestyle through our music and lyrics. But why do we hate being labeled as CHH?

#SoS Blog ~ Valentine’s Story

Oh, Valentine’s Day. How bitterly that rolls off the tongue. I guess it only takes one person to ruin your whole lovey-day-experience. Mine was ruined in 2005.

I was dating a girl from Stanford in 2003 and she was pretty cool. I wrote a majority of my album ‘Landscape of time’ while visiting her. She inspired me to learn more. She inspired me to be a better writer and artist. But it got to a point where she was hindering me from hanging with my friends, going to church, & performing at shows.

We had a pretty decent give and take relationship. Whenever holidays or birthdays came, we got something for the other. And sometimes we would try to one-up the other by getting a gift that was bigger or better than the other’s gift. One time, she bought a cd deck for my car and replaced the two front speakers as well. Of course, I bought her almost every season of Friends. So it wasn’t like I didn’t give her gifts.

I say this to tell you about Valentine’s Day 2005. I bought her another season of her favorite tv show and I got her chocolates and a nice card. I even bought a gift card for her favorite clothing store. I was set. I drove about 80 miles to visit her at Stanford for Valentine’s Day. When we exchanged gifts she opened hers first and kind of threw a fit. She handed me a card and some candy. I’m looking for more. As she saw me look she said “yeah, I got you something else. Speakers for the rear of your car. But, I’m not going to give them to you. I don’t think you deserve them. They cost a lot of money and you only got me a DVD set. So, I’m going to keep them.” I was so confused and distraught. Where did I go wrong. Was my gift really lacking? I guess she wanted more out me. More gifts. Or at least more expensive gifts.

We had a nice heated discussion and I basically drove back home as a single man. She had ended the relationship on V-Day. Wow. I was surprised. I was upset. I was disappointed.

I was… relieved.

I might be the underdog, but I always bounce back. I might fall down but I always get up and return to pursue love again. Unfortunately, this earth has fleeting beauty and a lack of true love. Only God can show true love. Only God can give love that is unconditional. It is best that we as finite beings look up to Him and try to replicate his ways and give His kind of love. That is our success story. Our testimony is in Him! I would not have found my wife. The woman God created for me. To balance me out. If it weren’t for my mistakes, my failures, my trying, my being number 2. Being the underdog. Sitting on sidelines. God has blessed me through my trial and tribulations and after pursuit and dedication I have surpassed my pride, my ambition, my swagger. I have found reconciliation through realization and humility. I am humble now.

Thank you God for testing me. Thank you God for blessing me. Look where we are now. We are becoming AnchorMEN. We have more than a hope, we have a truth, a design, a purpose. Let’s continue what Jesus has started.

We all need an S.O.S.
We can’t continue to be Sitting On Sidelines.
If we’re playing to win, then let’s Win The Day!

We all have a story about being number 2. What’s yours?

You Don’t Have to be Lecrae to be Used by God (via @DaSouth.com)

Guess what? You don’t have to be Lecrae to be relevant, signficant, or even have an effective music ministry. And you know what else? Lecrae would agree 100%.

First things first, shoutout to Lecrae and Reach Records for all that they have done to bring glory and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ. Their ministry is very much appreciated and is a blessing to many throughout the world. Thank God for them! I mean that sincerely.

So why this write-up? Well, on November 11, 2011 an artist (who I won’t name) hit me up on Facebook with a private message. I wanted to share the message he sent because I’m sure that he isn’t the only artist who has probably had this thinking. Here it is…

Even if you’re not currently playing the field, it’s better to be sitting on sidelines than standing in the bleachers simply spectating. Remember, you got next!

P.S.

Here are the lyrics:

You can say; “We’re destined for greatness!”
You can say; “You were made for this!”
Well, I was!
So…Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put. Me. In!Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put. Me. In!I’ve been practicing so hard just to make it
If I had a chance you know how far I’d take it
Trust me I’m a great kid, soon I’ll be praised
Thanking my parents for the child they raised
Not boasting or bragging, I’m chosen I’m handling
I’m hot-roasted and handsome, this energy I’m channeling
If only, I could get it out, put it on the field
From a play to a set, from a tackle to a steal
(yeah) I gotcha, I’ll put the ‘D’ in defense
I am D man, so stop playing on the fence
This game is for real, so you got to get it right
Put me in coach, ‘cause I’m down for life
Even if I fall, even if I stumble
I will not whine, and I will not grumble
I will get back up and give another 1-10
‘Cause to give up is just another dumb sin …so…

PUT ME IN COACH, I’M READY FOR MY CHANCE
I’VE PREPARED ALL SEASON, IT’S TIME TO ADVANCE
PUT ME IN COACH, YOU WON’T REGRET IT
GAMBLE WITH ME, YOU’LL BE GLAD YOU BET IT

YOU CAN PUT ME IN, YOU CAN PUT ME IN COACH
YOU CAN PUT ME IN, PUT ME IN ONCE AGAIN
PUT ME IN COACH, YOU’LL BE GLAD YOU DID
PUT ME IN COACH, I’M NOT JUST A KID

So…
Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put. Me. In!

Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put Me In Coach! Put Me In Coach!
Put. Me. In!

[I won’t let em make fun, just cuz I’m young
I’ll be an example and I’ll set it with style
By what I say, by what I do
By my love and faith, staying pure and true]

This is how I do, this is how it is
Giving a shout out to all the other kids
That be dealing with the biz, from a sizzle to a fizz
We will stand strong, we will place my bid
Use the gift given, thanks for the support
To every one who put their faith in any sort
We will not let you down, we’ll just be around
If not in the city, then we got to rep the town
This is for our school, even the alumni
We got to prove ourselves, no longer a dumb guy
Got to be so fly, if you let us spread our wings
Like the voice of an angel, listen as he sings

Put. Me. In!

Put. Me. In!

Chris Treborn’s goal with Soul Anchor Music

Chris Treborn has is a Christian Hip-Hop artist that loves sharing the stage and the limelight, especially with his fellow brother and sister artists. He has shared the stage with some big names in Christian Hip-Hop like GRITS, CookBook of LA Symphony, and Braille Brizzy himself. When he opened up for GRITS in 2010, he shared half of his 30 minutes of stage time with Myra Hart. Christian admits “I love her voice, even though people compare her to Adele, she has something uniquely different about her.” Perhaps it is her soulful rhythm and blues style with a punch of pop that makes her stand out. Or maybe it is her vocal range – which puts her above and beyond the capabilities comparable to Adele and P!NK.

REVIEW: “WASH” by @DavidMichael313

DAVID MICHAEL – “WASH”

Detroit, Michigan has some of the greatest emcees rising from ‘The Underground’. If you haven’t heard David Michael, you have sadly been missing out on one of the best-kept secrets. Well, it’s not much of a secret anymore. Da South posted a review on his last project. In fact, I got to know David Michael by doing that review. He is not your average rapper. He has something more; passion, strength, integrity, and most importantly – Christ Jesus. David Michael is back with even more of what he has always been offering. Get refreshed with a little ‘WASH’!

REVIEW: Bumps INF – “Who Is Mark James? 2.0” (@BumpsINF)

God Over Money + Bumps INF present…

“Who Is Mark James? 2.0″

Bumps INF is back with another freebie. Yes, you heard right. Mister Infinite has another mixtape, and it’s $Free.99!

When I first saw this project advertised I thought it was a re-release of Who Is Mark James? with more songs and less promos. I figured Bumps got signed & WIMJ wasn’t as big as they wanted it to be, so God Over Money wanted to re-release it to boost the Bumps stock. Geez, I was completely wrong. Bumps is back. Scratch that! Bumps is HERE! He is Still here, he never left! To prove Bumps INF is here to stay – Who Is Mark James? 2.0 pops off with Lavoisier & St. Joogs on that “Grow The Heck Up” segment. Instead of a ‘Mix-Tape’ the 2nd edition is more like a radio show. At first I didn’t get this and I thought it was poorly mixed, but that’s not the case. This playlist is a showcase of Bumps’ infinite skills; lyrically, and stylistically. Bumps still has drops from everyone’s favorite christian hip-hoppers too. He has the game in a choke-hold! Or maybe it’s more like a full-Nelson.

Q&A w/ David Michael – ‘Send The Sword’, Opening for Reach, “The Underground”

I heard David Michael was putting out a new song via Facebook so I contacted him about the song and also asked him about his experience over the last year or so.

Q&A

Christian Treborn: “Send the Sword” is your newest song. Is it apart of your upcoming album or project, a mixtape maybe?  What are your goals with those projects? Also, was there any inspiration behind the writing of ‘StS’? I understand it’s about getting the Gospel out there, what more…?

David Michael: ‘Send the Sword’ is a single off “The Underground Part 2″. A follow up record to my 1st EP “The Undergound” Released April 10th, 2010. I am also working on an Album TBA later this year.

My goal with this record was to intentionally create a record that both the people that know God, and those that don’t could relate to and be interested in. Mainly covering topics I felt haven’t been addressed before with an over load of raw emotion and rapid fire lyrics.

With “Send the Sword” I wanted to convey a message that we need to send out the Word of God at any cost. Sometimes it costs us friends, money, even comfort, but its time to display Gods Word in Power. People who are in darkness are sick of us running our mouths, its time for our walks to scream loud, its way over due.

CT: I see on YouTube you have a lot of concert footage, especially for some Reach artists. How was it opening for Phanatik & Tedashii? Who else did you open for? Didn’t you open for Trip Lee or Lecrae?

DM: Yes I’ve opened up for Phanatik, Tedashii, Mahogany Jonz, Thi’zl, D-Maub, Trip Lee (twice), PRo, R-Swift, and Lecrae. I’m booked to open up for Lecrae again this coming May in Saginaw, MI.
I’m so thankful to God for opening up doors like this. It’s always a Blessing, not because of who they are, but because of what I always learn from them by watching and observing, appreciating the Gifts and Wisdom God has given them.

CT: Your last release was “The Underground”, How successful was “The Underground”? What did you learn from reviews or from the fans’ input about the project? Is there anything you would change or add to it? For those of us that want to purchase it, is it online, did you do any distribution, like iTunes?

DM: I got a great response off “The Underground”. Considering I sold it out of my trunk with no online presence, no marketing, or promotions etc. it did great. It sold just under 500 copies. On top of that I sowed over 500 copies to various organizations, and youth groups, so there is a little over 1,000 copies floating around.

A very popular (mainly secular station) FM 98.WJLB here in Detroit,MI. featured my single “Lonely Road” quite frequently in their rotation Sunday morning so I was amped about that!

I heard a lot of positive feedback from it, especially on the “ex-posits” I did in between songs. It was a huge bridge builder for the older generations. I saw the disconnect from the Pastors to the Youth Groups, so I intentionally gave them ex-posits to connect them again. Most Pastors here the name “Jesus” and say “OK we like it”, but for the most part they have no idea what most Christian Rap is saying.

I think “The Undergound served its purpose. It was my first record this side of Christianity and I needed to pour out what the Lord had been brewing in me.

I intentionally didn’t make it available online. I wanted it to be, well, under ground. A street album particularly made for Detroit. We have a lot of work to do here and I wanted to pour into the local Body with no real desire to gain a national platform. I submitted some singles and my album to some online Christian sites but only to hear what others outside the city would say. That way it would be unbiased.

NEW SONG: “Send The Sword” by David Michael

David Michael impressed me with the first song I heard from him – Stand Strong. I felt silly once I found out he was a white guy from Detroit. Yeah, he has that raspy-rap that could be compared to Eminem, but he has more energy and authenticity than Em. I mean, you can feel the power of his lyrics. Don’t believe me? Check out “Nightmares” from his album ‘The Underground’. DM is going to keep it 100 for as long as he can grip a mic. And even if he couldn’t, he will still be heard. His goal is that of the Disciples of Christ; get out the WORD, let the good news be heard, and spread the Gospel like there was no tomorrow.

His newest song is called “Send The Sword” – produced by Iz-Real Music (of Everyday Process) & opens up with the sounds of a battle scene like a Roman Empire TV series. If you want to compare his vocals to some known Holy Hip-Hoppers, consider the styles of Trip Lee versus Tedashii. This song isn’t his usual laid-back-yet-still-hyped style. He totally amped it up and sped up his vocals for ultimate affect. If you have heard his song “Get On The Grind”, this new song follows the same aspiration. It’s about witnessing to the nations, from local to global.

SEND THE SWORD!

Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

REVIEW: Bumps INF – “Who Is Mark James?” (@BumpsINF)

Bumps INF – “Who Is Mark James?”

After controversy over the use of secular beats, this mixtape never got a proper review that it deserved. So here we are checking out the latest project from Bump Infinite. Since I don’t listen to Top 40 Rap, I only know two or three of the twenty instrumentals used. Which makes this project a banger to me, but it might turn off the average Christian listener. My favorite thing about Bumps using rap beats is the possibility to use it to minister to the everyday rap fan, especially since Mister INF has the illest rhymes and the best guest features.
